Birthstones
The association of gemstones with different seasons is an ancient tradition which originated from the pagan cultures that believed in nature and surroundings. According to the pagan belief system, personality is affected by the time of the year in which birth takes place. Those who are born in the same season carry some distinguishing characteristics. Such beliefs found their way into the Jewish and Christian ideology to a small extent later; however, these beliefs are more strongly linked with astrology. With the passage of time, people accredited different gemstones to different months of the year. One popular belief indicates that color was a major element in an individual birthstone’s association with a particular month. The popularity of this belief reached its peak within the eighteen century when a number of different lists were created to link different months and gemstones together. The table shows birthstones for each month according to the American Gem Society’s records. Today, birthstones exist as a birthday gift representing the Gregorian year of birth. What is your Birthstones Color and Treatment Clarity, Cutting/Finishing and Grading How to Care for Gemstones
