Birthstone for August - Peridot
The unusual peridot, a lustrous transparent stone in spectacular shades of green was originally a volcanic gem from the mineral olivine. It formed in the rocks after fierce volcanic eruptions. On rare occasions the unique olive green stone known as pallasite was found in meteorites that had crashed to earth.
They transcended time and space dating back more than 4000 years. This vitreous beauty was originally mined on the Isle of Serpents (renamed St. John’sIsland) in the Red Sea. It was mentioned in the Bible under the name pitdah (Hebrew) and by Pliny in Natural History (70AD). Ancient Egyptian royalty including Cleopatra were enamored with these exquisite gems. The Egyptians referred to the peridot as The Gen of the Sun since it was too bright to be seen in the desert in the daylight hours. The Romans were fascinated by the Evening Emerald due to its ability to glow at night. It was searched for by lamplight once darkness had descended. The moonlight made the sparkling crystals more visible. The miners would find the stones, mark their place, then return in daylight to extricate them.
This velvety gem can be found in the Breastplates of the Jewish High Priest and decorating medieval churches. In the Cologne Cathedral, a peridot weighing close to 200 carats adorns the shrine of the three magi.
The French were the first to call this lime green stone, peridot in the eighteenth century previously known as topaz. It was modified from the French peritot meaning unclear. Although, it may have originated from the Arabic term faridat or gem. The golden yellow variety is chrysolite from the Greek, the golden stone. The richer the vividness and purer the definition, the higher the value. In recent years, Pakistan’s newest deposits have some of the rarest and finest quality peridots available. From a historic standpoint Burmaand Egyptmined superior stones. Other areas of production are Zagbarad Island, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, Hawaiiand Arizona. The abundance of today’s production comes from Arizona, although, the quality is considered slightly inferior.
In the middle ages, peridots were thought to give divine intervention and foresight. They were a favorite of pirates who wore them on amulets believing these fine stones had the power to ward off evil particularly when set in gold.
Peridots had medicinal properties when formed into chalices enhancing the effects of a healing medication placed in the drink. They were considered a tonic, cleansing and healing the heart and solar plexus. Their energy placed an aura or shield around the physical being. They were used to treat emotional issues, reducing anger, jealousy and stress. Renewal, purification and rebirth were attributed to these lively treasures.
